Are you looking for a small single bed or a larger bed for your child? Safety and height of the bed is also an important factor, as well as space in your home. You want to avoid nasty accidents of falling out the bed and you hope that everyone gets a good night's sleep! It is important that your little one feels safe and that their sleeping routine does not change too drastically. Below is some useful information regarding the purchase of a small single bed:

WHY CHOOSE A SMALL SINGLE BED?

The sizing of a small single bed can vary from shop to shop. We have a small single bed of 160 cm long, which is a perfect intermediate size. An adult bed is quite a transition after the cot, so choose wisely. A single bed of 200 cm long is often much too big for your toddler who needs to get used to a large bed. A small single bed is an intermediate step to a large bed, but it will last a few years longer than a 140 cm long toddler bed.

BUYING A SMALL SINGLE BED: SHOULD YOU USE SAFETY RAILS?

Safety rails on your child’s bed is recommended. When your toddler starts sleeping in this new bed around 3 years old, it is wise to use safety rails. A toddler can be restless at night and roll around in bed, this can be a safety concern, so to prevent them from falling out of bed and being startled awake, its best to take preventative measures. Over time, you can always remove the safety rails if you feel it is no longer needed.

THE ADVANTAGE OF A JUNIOR BED WITH DRAWER

A storage drawer under the junior bed is super practical. A trundle drawer on wheels can be ordered together with a Petite Amélie junior bed and you immediately have a lot more storage space under the bed. A junior bed with drawer is very useful for toys or bedding. Have a look at the junior bed range we offer!

WHAT ACCESSORIES SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A KIDS BED?

A childrens mattress is an important piece to consider, the size needs to be correct for the cot / toddler bed / single bed. Based on the size, you will have to have a look at the various kids fitted sheets available. Our kids fitted sheets come in various sizes and designs. Make sure to look at the mattress height as this also varies from product to product. You then need to consider the dimensions of a duvet, the choice of a pillow, the difference between cold foam and a latex mattress, the advantage of a mattress protector, etc. To give you an idea, some points are described below:

  • Dimensions of a toddler duvet

A duvet inner with a toddler duvet cover set of 150x120 is perfectly suitable for the 160x70 and 160x80cm beds. Depending on the temperature in the room in summer and winter, there is a choice of different heat classes which is called the tog of the duvet. A tog is essentially a measure of how effectively a duvet insulates heat. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet will be, with 1 tog being very cool and lightweight, and 15 being the warmest. An all-round duvet inner is usually a good choice for moderately heated children's rooms that don't get too cold in the winter and not too hot in the summer.

  • Tip: Choose a flat toddler pillow

Preferably choose a pillow that is not too thick when your child is only three years old. A flat toddler pillow is highly recommended.

  • Tip: Choose a breathable mattress

Preferably take a breathable mattress of HR cold foam or possibly latex. Always look at the product description and if there is any doubt, contact us with your questions. Safety is of utmost importance, so always make sure of the details when it comes to a breathable mattress for your little one. For hygiene reasons, you should preferably choose a cover with a zipper that is removable and washable. Look at the washing instructions so that you clean it thoroughly, but at the correct temperature to prevent shrinkage. Our sizes vary, from a mattress 160x80 or a 160x70cm. Our house bed is available in these two sizes so the mattress 160x80 or 160x70cm is available to purchase separately or as a bundle offer.

  • Tip: Choose a moisture-resistant mattress protector

In addition to a fitted sheet, a mattress protector or waterproof mattress protector is ideal as bedding for your child. Your three-year-old may not be completely potty trained yet. With a moisture-resistant mattress protector you protect the mattress against minor accidents and it remains clean and hygienic.

1. WHAT SIZE BEDS CAN I CHOOSE FROM

We have a range of beds suitable from newborn cots, to toddler beds in size 140 x70cm. We then have a size up which is 160x80 or a 160x70cm suitable for children from 2 to 9 years on average. These include our house bed options. These are slightly larger than our toddler beds. The size larger than this will be our 200x90cm beds which are more suited for a teenager.

2. DO YOU HAVE MATTRESSES AVAILABLE TO FIT ALL BEDS

We sure do! Our mattresses are perfectly suitable to fit the beds we currently have online.

3. HOW DO I KNOW WHAT BEDDING TO BUY FOR MY BED

First choose the bed, then a mattress to fit it. The fitted sheet will be the same size as the mattress / bed length. You then choose a duvet and bedding that will be larger than the mattress you chose. To be comfortable, the duvet should always be at least 8 inches (about 20cm) wider on each side of the bed it covers. Read our useful blog about choosing bedding sizes here.
