At home with Aquine, Robbin, Nora, Noud & Sofie

In a house full of authentic details, with high ceilings, ornate mouldings, original double doors and chevron floors, Aquine (@familiehuys.loois) and Robbin live with Nora, Noud and little Sofie. Their style is eclectic, classic and warm: a calm base with bursts of colour, warm walnut, terrazzo and the occasional modern twist. The result is a home with a character all its own, and above all, one that is truly lived in.

Chapter I

Personality over Pinterest

A copy of Pinterest or a favourite Instagram account? That's exactly what Aquine and Robbin didn't want. They chose to bring out the strength of the house itself, and with so many beautiful original features, it made for a wonderful canvas. The base is calm, but colour plays a leading role. Take the pink living room with its purple sofa, which feels surprisingly calm and warm, or the hallway, painted in a bold colour that still looks elegant. They also love filling the house with personal pieces: a painting by the children, photos, treasured souvenirs and contemporary art. The styling isn't finished yet, but that's part of the fun.

"We love a calm base with colourful touches. A mix of authentic details and a modern twist." — Aquine

A quiet family moment
Chapter II

Here, life is meant to be lived

Living in a showroom? They’re not keen on that. “We’ll get the designer bits once the children are older,” they say with a wink. Broken crockery brings good luck, and the sofa is made of velvet: super-easy to clean – a real tip for parents with young children. They also embrace life amidst the toys. This phase doesn’t last long, so stepping on the odd Lego brick now and then is all part of it. Family life mainly revolves around the kitchen, which is why they’ve positioned it as centrally as possible in the house. Here, they cook together and invite friends round, whilst the children play at the table or in the living room. That way, everyone stays connected at all times. And if it gets too hectic, they simply close the en-suite doors for a bit.

With five of them, they've become a well-oiled machine: busy, cosy and chaotic. At dinner, everyone takes turns talking about their day, parents included, without anyone interrupting. Really listening to each other and being open matter a lot to them. Each child has their own little jobs, from loading and unloading the dishwasher to putting their laundry in the basket, and they genuinely enjoy it. "That sense of responsibility – you can see them grow." When everyone starts talking over each other again, Robbin or Aquine calls out, "Hocus Pocus!" and the kids answer in unison: "Everybody Focus!" It works every time. Something else that's truly part of this family is the cargo bike. They've already worn out three, and the newest one has clocked up more than 11,000 kilometres in just one year. But however busy life gets, the foundation stays the same: "Honesty, love and really making time for each other."

Chapter III

Stylish play

The first Petite Amélie piece to arrive in their home was the Cocoon toddler bed. Its rounded shapes caught Aquine's eye straight away, and the warm walnut was a perfect match for the rest of the house. Sofie adores it. She's a sweet little doll mummy who loves anything cute, so the doll's pram is another favourite. Just don't underestimate her: as the youngest, her voice counts just as much, and she makes sure of that herself. The matching bedding is so soft that Aquine secretly wishes it came in a double size too. The corduroy play sofa earned a prominent spot in the dining room because it's far too pretty to tuck away. Together with the Parisienne dollhouse, the crane and the Lune bookcase, it shows that toys and children's furniture can be truly stylish. So when does this house really feel like home? When children's voices fill the rooms, when friends come over to play and everyone is skipping around. "That is true wealth."

"The colours and materials of Petite Amélie fit so beautifully in our home, and I think in any interior. Whether you love bold colours or a calm base, it goes with everything." — Aquine
